There are too many things you have to consider before picking a cell phone provider. Here are some factors you should consider. Note, this is more for regular non-prepay plan.
*Think about the location you are in and see if you get very good reception with each providers.
*Will you be talking with people with the same provider as you, then look for service with free mobile to mobile.
*Do you make more of your calls during the night? Look for plans that are free after 9pm and weekends or pay a little extra for after 7pm.
*Sprint has a plan where you only pay for what you use, prices vary month to month. Cingular has rollover and you forfeit the minutes at the end of the year.
*If you work for a big company or corporation you can sometimes get a discount.
*If your parents have cellphones, then ask to be on a family plan. You don't have to me in the same area code.

I don't know for prepaid plans but when you are on a regular plan, factor in approx. $10 every month for taxes and other crap. For example if you are on a $39.99 plan add for taxes and other regulatory fees. Good luck.
References :
started with tracfone five years ago, but it was getting expensive buying minutes and service was spotty (roaming charges sucked big time). Switched to At&t, was with them for 3 years. Now with cingular family plan, have over 2000 min. rollover, discounted with corporate affiliation.

Id have to say that a regular phone would be a much better deal than the pay as you go phones. Most plans start anywhere from 45.00 - 55.00 a month. It all depends what your paying a month now for a pay as you go. Theres lots of different plans on the market to choose from.you just need to look at the anytime minutes and the nite and weekend minutes also. I have rollover minutes on my phone and thats a good thing too. That way your not throwing money away. The only bad thing about regular plans are the contracts you have to sign. Most phones have a 1 yr. contract.
References :
It really depends on your usage, area of coverage, what's advailable in your area (just cause the map says it covers you doesn't mean you get great coverage or that you wont' roam). How do you use your phone? emergencies only then Tracfone is a viable option, minutes are expensive but they almost never expire. Do you use it alot go with a regular carrier's plan like Verizon, Alltel, or U.S. Cellular. It depends on alot of things. Easiest way is to just go to all the stores hear the sales pitches, then go home and think about how you will use it and if it's viable for you.
References :
I have a Tracphone and I have no problems with getting service. You can get the minute cards at many locations and they cost anywhere from $20-50. You have to put more time on your phone every 3 months (90 days) to continue service. The only thing I don't like is that you can't get any "cool" ringtones or wallpapers.
